SAKURA SCIENCE EXCHANGE PROGRAM 2023: A JOURNEY OF ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE IN JAPAN

From 11th -16th of December, 2023, 8 students from the University of Science – VNUHCM has participated in the Sakura Science Exchange Program (SSP) at Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU), Osaka, Japan. This is an annual international collaboration between the Environmental Department of the University of Science, VNUHCM, and Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan. The students had the opportunity to experience the academic environment in a developed country, gaining more specific insights into their future educational paths. This also serves as an excellent opportunity to explore the culture of another country and connect with international friends.

Through academic lectures by professors on research related to air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), wastewater issues, and environmental improvement through bio-diesel, the participants engaged in enthusiastic discussions and gained valuable knowledge throughout the program.

The students also had the opportunity to visit advanced laboratories and meet professors from diverse fields such as Environmental Science, Informatic System, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biology, and the Energy and Environment Laboratory. The professors shared insights with the students about the academic and research environment at Japan’s universities.

In addition to academic activities, students also immersed themselves in Japanese culture through fascinating experiences such as visiting Osaka Castle, the Kiyomizu Temple, the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, the bustling street of Dotonbori, and Namba Central Park. At these locations, students had the chance to immerse themselves in everyday life, embracing the lively atmosphere of Osaka.

The Sakura Science Exchange Program has been and continues to be a valuable opportunity for the students of the University of Science, VNU – HCM. The program not only facilitates participants in broadening their knowledge but also assists them in exploring directions for scientific research and opportunities for postgraduate scholarships abroad.

[THE HO CHI MINH COMMUNIST YOUTH UNION CONFERENCE OF THE FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT TERM 2022-2024, PERIOD 2023-2024]

On the afternoon of November 4, 2023, at 6:30 pm, at Hall I, University of Science, VNU-HCM, the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Environment organized the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Conference of the Faculty of Environment for the term 2022 – 2024, period 2023 – 2024 has taken place successfully.

The Faculty of Environment Delegation is very pleased to welcome dean committee of the Faculty of Environment, Student Cell 7, the Standing Committee of the School Youth Union, representatives of affiliated Youth Union branches, Representatives of the Joint Branch of the Faculty of Environment, and representatives of Grassroots Youth Union – Club/Team/Group of units, brothers and sisters who are former officers of the Environmental Faculty Youth Union.

The conference lasted nearly 2 hours with the serious work of comrades, so they approved and agreed with all the contents of the Conference documents, presented the Summary Report of the Youth Union’s work and the youth movement, Report reviewing the Executive Committee of the Youth Union of the Faculty of Environment as well as setting out targets and directions for activities of the Union’s work and the youth movement for the 2022 – 2024 term, 2023 – 2024 period. At the same time, the Union Conference The faculty also commended collectives and individuals who were exemplary and pioneers in the work of the Youth Union and the movement during the past term.

Announcement of 7-SEAS Workshop and field Trip 2023

On behalf of VNUHCM-University of Science and Institute of Geophysics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (IGP, VAST), we are pleased to invite you very cordially to attend the 7-SEAS (Seven SouthEast Asian Studies) Workshop 2023.

Date and venue:

From 06 to 08 November 2023.

The major objectives of the workshop are to (1) discuss 7-SEAS activities, including recent experiments and campaigns, (2) overview global and regional networks, for instance, NASA/AERONET and MPLNET, and (3) to report other related regional/local studies in SEA.

International experts in pursuing the 7-SEAS project present their research results and propose your ideas for further collaborations in future activities in the framework of 7-SEAS project. The meeting will be in the form of a workshop rather than a scientific conference, with active discussions on the data related to Southeast Asian (including western Pacific) atmospheric environment, and planning for remote sensing, modeling and field research.

All participants of previous 7-SEAS activities, and researchers and program managers from environment sciences/studies, meteorology, atmospheric chemistry/physics, remote sensing and instrumentation.

• For candidates without a diploma, a certificate of annual income must be submitted instead during the application process. In such cases, candidates must include a copy of the TNDH diploma before June 30, 2023. Failure to submit the TNDH diploma by this deadline will result in the cancellation of exam results by the school.

The field of Natural Resources & Environment encompasses a range of disciplines, including land and water resources, mineral resources, geology, environmental science, meteorology, hydrology, climate change, surveying, mapping, and integrated management of seas and islands. This multidisciplinary domain significantly impacts national security and defense, socio-economic development, and the sustainable progress of the country. Resolution No. 06/NQ-CP, issued on 21/01/2021, underscores the importance of advancing scientific research, technological application, resource management, and environmental protection in the foreseeable future.

Currently, the environmental sector in our country faces a shortage of human resources, both in quantity and quality, compared to the actual needs. This shortage extends beyond state agencies to include environmental treatment companies, water supply and drainage units, environmental solution consulting enterprises, non-governmental organizations implementing environmental projects, and more. There is a noticeable deficit in qualified human resources and professional capacity for environmental management. Most companies, factories, and enterprises require environmental professionals to address emerging environmental issues and ensure environmental safety in production through the application of technology and adherence to green, clean, economical, and environmentally protective processes.

Given this social context and the demand for skilled human resources in the environmental sector, the training programs offered by the Faculty of Environment aim to contribute significantly by providing professionally and methodically trained environmental experts to meet the labor market’s needs in Ho Chi Minh City and nationwide.

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Environment program, graduates can pursue various career paths, including:

Employment in production facilities, waste treatment plants, water supply and drainage companies, water treatment plants, urban environmental companies, industrial parks, export processing zones, and environmental (consultancy) organizations.
The environmental health and safety departments of production units.
Opportunities in statewide agencies such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Science and Technology, etc
Positions in companies engaged in the trading of chemicals and equipment within the environmental sector.

Scholarship Opportunities:

Annual scholarships from VNU-HCM, the University, the Faculty, and the Alumni Liaison Committee of the Faculty.
Scholarships for students with outstanding academic achievements and challenging family circumstances, provided by social funds, state agencies, businesses, and foreign organizations.
Additionally, students at the Faculty of Environment have the opportunity to receive various short-term study scholarships, exchange programs, as well as master’s and Ph.D. scholarships in developed countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and European countries.

Employer and Stakeholder’s feedback:

According to the results of the employment survey in the academic year 2020-2021 regarding the quality of graduates from the Faculty of Environment’s training programs, employers expressed a high level of satisfaction. Approximately 75% of employers were satisfied with the alignment between graduates’ skills and training expertise. The survey also indicated a robust employment rate for graduates, reaching 91%. Among these, about 65% found employment in non-state enterprises, 20% initiated their own businesses, and the remaining percentage secured positions in state units and foreign joint ventures.
